How is the parking near the Rhode Island Convention Center?

Posted by admin on October 23rd, 2009 and filed under convention center | 2 Comments »

Parking garages? I’m sure there must be. I have driven through Providence many times but don’t usually get off the Interstate. Thanks.

If you are going to the Rhode Island Convention Center, you are probably better off parking at Providence Place Mall and cross the skybridge. the parking fee is cheaper (3 hours for $1 and I think $5 for up to 6 or something). Parking in Providence, especially Down Town is hectic and way too expensive.

I’ve learned that If you go to downtown, you ether park in Providence Place Mall, or you just take the bus, it’s def. cheaper that way.

What parking garages are close to the convention center downtown that have access to the skywalk?

If its raining I don’t want to be walking outdoors!

A lot of the skywalks have been removed around downtown, but there are still connections to the Convention Center. There is a garage just to the north of it that is connected by a covered walkway.

You can see a map showing all the garages and the skywalk connections to the Convention Center on this page on their web site (scroll down to the bottom).

Does the ri convention center pay well for employee’s?

Posted by admin on October 19th, 2009 and filed under convention center | 1 Comment »

I just got a phone call to work for the ri convention center concession stand on the weekends for upcoming events, and the manager says this is an union job, what does that mean, never had a job with the union before.

i was a manager for the houston convention center and we paid just above minimum wage- no benefits. but- we were not union.

unions are supposed to work on behalf of employees, so the pay is usually better and your job is generally better protected than non-union.

either way- it should be good if u are trying to earn extra money, but not a career move.

Can anyone Help. I am trying to get the credintials or regulation to opening a convention center.?

We are looking for what is needed to open the convention center, exp; size. speakers, doors , fire exits. what makes a convention center

I would start by contacting your state’s Governor’s Office and ask if there is a regulatory committee that governs convention centers in your state. Most likely not, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

Then you contact your city zoning and planning board to get the regulations on where you can build your convention center. You will probably have to apply for a permit for your convention center separate from the actual building permit. They should also be able to help answer questions about parking capacity laws, occupancy laws, and public disturbance laws which will all affect your business.

Once you have architectural plans, you will want to visit your local fire chief to review the fire and safety laws for your state. He will be able to tell you how many fire exits, how many fire extinguishers, room capacity, electrical wiring issues, types of doors permitted, type of sprinkler system required, etc….

For general "what makes a convention center" you’ll want to find an architect that has experience designing convention centers. Google search should do the trick for this one if you don’t live in a large metro area.

Also, call around to other convention centers in the US and ask questions. The manager should be able to direct you to industry resources for more information.
