When and why did American sports teams adopted the "City Nickname" naming convention?

Posted by admin on September 23rd, 2009 and filed under convention city | 1 Comment »

As in "Miami(city) Dolphins(nickname)" or "New York Yankees." I know that some very early American sporting clubs such as Oneida Football Club (Boston) and Athletic Club of Philadelphia (later to become the Oakland Athletics, often refered to as "Athletic" rather than "Philadelphia") used different naming conventions, but around the early 20th century it seems that most, if not all teams utilized the now standard "[city] [nickname]" convention. Just wondering what brought this along, if anything. Outside the United States, this naming convention is catching on with non-American sports teams, where for the most part they have utilized other naming conventions which often does not even indicate what city the club is in (Arsenal, Harlequin FC, Celtic) or use nicknames (Olympique Lyonnais, Manchester City, Ajax Amsterdam). Just wondering, thanks for any answers.

Good question mate, but I don’t think it’s exclusive to American cities. We have the same here in Australia. Rugby League started in 1908 and clubs took some reference to their geographical location. Manly Sea Eagles, being by the beach, Eastern Suburbs Roosters, for the Rooster crowing in the morning, South Sydney Rabbitohs (that’s the club that Russel Crowe owns), for the people that caught and ate Rabbits in the early days.

Country teams took a regional or traditional approach. Lithgow Shamrocks for the Irish convicts, Young Cherrypickers for region’s fruit area and Junee Diesels for the railyards

Newly admitted teams have adopted American names purely for marketing purposes. Canberra Raiders, for the club that plays away and raids the opponents, Illawarra Steelers, being based in a steel town.

Some puzzle me such as Brisbane Broncos as their isn’t a Bronco anywhere in Brisbane and Penrith Panthers for the same reason. Again, it’s marketing.

Locally we have the ACT Brumbies (mountain horses) Canberra Raiders and Canberra Capitals which is women’s basketball.

Hope this helps

Gee… Do you think that maybe if you were to look at your American History text book, you might be able to find the answer on your own. Who knows… You might even learn something!

Public transportation to MECC(Matrade Exhibition & Convention Center) from city center of Kuala Lumpur?

Posted by admin on September 17th, 2009 and filed under convention city | 3 Comments »

I will live in the hotel JW Marriott (183 Jalan Bukit Bintang) during visiting Kuala Lumpur. I have to go to MECC (Matrade Exhibition & Convention Center, Jalan Khidmat Usaha, off Jalan Duta)) everyday from my hotel. Is there any public transportation I can take? Where can I find a map of Kuala Lumpur including the area where MECC is located?

hmm..my personal recommendation to you..it is the best for you to rent a car and drive yourself everyday to the convention centre..

The place itself is not that far, but then, traffic in Bukit Bintang is like chaos every morning and evening!! so i scared that you might stuck on the road! So either you rent a car or ask the hotel’s concierge to arrange a daily taxi pick up from your hotel..or maybe, if you dont mind taking the public bus..well, there a public bus called RapidKL. From your hotel’s main entrance, turn to the left and walk up straight, you will pass by Louis Vuitton Boutique, the Lot 10 shopping mall (green building) until you met a junction with traffic lights..from here you will see there’s a Monorail Train station on your left and Mcdonald restaurant on your right. Go to the Mcdonald’s area and you will see there’s a bus station. Get on to bus which takes you to ‘Kota Raya’. Then, when you reach here, get onto another connecting RapidKL bus # B115..this bus will take you directly to Matrade.

Check out on this useful link..scroll until the end where you can find the bus route http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_KL_buses

Here a useful map of Kuala Lumpur..

Check with your city and see if you need a license, then call the convention center to find out who the promoter for the auctions is and where to apply.

where is the cogic international womens convention held in Kansas City starting May 26?

Posted by admin on September 1st, 2009 and filed under convention city | 2 Comments »

we have determined that it will be held in Kansas city, KS, which differs in small but important ways from Kansas City mo. I advise you to call cogic women’s department at 901 775 0600 for exact details of where and at what times the convention will be held-they should also have details on speakers/presentations.
hope this helped.
