How uncomfortable will McCain be at the NAACP national convention next week in Cincinnati?

Posted by admin on October 3rd, 2009 and filed under national convention | 15 Comments »

McCain is due to speak Monday (I believe) at the convention.
Given his past (i.e. being the Governor of the only state to deny the MLK holiday for years, etc) with the African American community, how uncomfortable will he be?

IMO, he’ll be about as comfortable as a prostitute in church!

Thoughts?

They should play him in with Public Enemy’s "By The Time I Get To Arizona." That would make him feel more comfortable.

What will be the entertainment for the Democratic National Convention?

And, it may not be ALL on the convention floor.
Kook – could you be a little more vague?

Yes, there will be protesters outside. Get your lawn chairs and watch the hippies get tossed and arrested.

Nothing like watching hippies, code pink, and others getting arrested.

Who will control the accreditation commitee at the Democratic National Convention?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under national convention | 2 Comments »

The accreditation commitee decides who gets "seated" at the convention and may wind up deciding if Florida or Michigan delegates will be able to attend and vote.

The credentials committee is composed of people chosen by the state delegates (my understanding is 158 which works out to each state getting one for every 20 national convention delegates) and a small number of "at-large" members (my understanding is 25) appointed by the DNC chair.

Like the actual delegation to the convention, the committee slots are awarded to the candidates proportionately. For example, my state has three spots on the credentials committee, Obama won the state by 1%. As such, he gets two of the members on the committee and Clinton gets one from my state. To have a hard count of the numbers, you would need to go state-by-state to see how many people that state gets on the committee and then apportion that number based on the results in the state.

With 8 states still to vote, nobody has final numbers yet. However, based on the results to date, my expectation is that neither candidate will have a majority of the committee, leaving control to the appointees of Governor Dean.

More importantly, the credential committee does not make the final decision as to who gets seated. They make an inital report to the Convention of who should get seated which forms the temporary roll of the convention. If enough members of the minority of the committee objects, they can file a minority report. In that case, the Convention decides which report to accept. If there is not an agreement about this issue prior to the convention, there will be a minority report. It is only once a decision is made on the credentials report that there is a permanent roll of the convention.

Human trafficking organization that was National Missionary Convention in Tulsa?

I’m sure there were a couple of different stand for human trafficking, but the one I’m trying to remember sold bracelets and was on the far left side when you walked in. Even if you didn’t go to the National Missionary Convention it would help if anyone could name off a few organizations if they know of any. Thanks :)

Try Amnesty International. They track this stuff.

Why is the Republican National Convention looking boring?

Posted by admin on September 23rd, 2009 and filed under national convention | 15 Comments »

Short speeches, and not a main Republican figures. Or they are trying to make this convention look like as a new Republican party?. I am just curious. Watched the DNC, it was like a main event, it reminded me like Wrestlemania events.

Because it WAS Boring! And for the record an event, especially one that is celebrating the American Democratic spirit doesn’t and in fact shouldn’t be boring! Fireworks, Music, funny hats, Cheering as well as pertinent issues are ALL a part of American culture and politics. You know good and well that the Democratic National Convention was not Wrestle Mania. You are just upset that the Convention was lively, colorful, professional and very well put together. And by the way conservative doesn’t have to equal boring either. The problem is that whoever put together the Republican convention is running off of old ideas. You can clearly see the difference between the two conventions; its the old standard v. the new and innovative. The Republican convention so far has reeked of the 1990s. The Convention and indeed the Party as a whole is struggling to be contemporary.

Why is there a democratic and republican national convention?

Posted by admin on September 21st, 2009 and filed under national convention | 5 Comments »

Didn’t these conventions serve intially to get a tally of every states primary results and choose the candidate? Today, with the news media and advanced voting technology we know who has won the poles within a day and who will capture the presidential bid for the dems or republicans way before the convention. Are these conventions redundant and a waste of time?

They are a bit of a waste of time, but they are also like a giant party and celebration. Perhaps they remain as a formality.

Why was Shawn Johnson chosen to represent at the Democratic National Convention?

Just caught Jennifer Hudson singing the National Anthem (beautifully, I might add) at the DNC, and I saw Olympic gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson standing alongside her on the stage. I know she’s only 16, but has she been campaigning for Obama for a while? Was she asked to participate as a symbol of "peace" with her trademark peace sign earrings? Just curious!

I bet most of the Olympians are going to make appearances at both conventions. No matter what the political affiliation, it must be exciting.

is the Republican national convention held every year or only on election years?

Posted by admin on September 15th, 2009 and filed under national convention | 4 Comments »

I basically want to know if the GOP has a major national meeting every year.

There are small covens occasionally but Klan-A-Palooza only happens once every four years.
