I’ll be at a conference in Sept. and can’t afford to eat at the Marriott for every meal. Are there Subway Sandwiches or a coffee shop within walking distance?

I do this in every city in every country: walk around and look for a crowded place. The bigger the crowd waiting to get in the better. Never, never eat at an empty or nearly empty place. Good Luck and have fun!

The Convention Center is really close to the Reading Terminal Market (12th and Arch) which has heaps of fairly reasonable places to grab a bite for breakfast or lunch (closes at 6pm….so no dinner). You’re also not too far away from Philly’s Chinatown (around 10th and Arch) which is full of cheap places.
I don’t remember the name off the top of my head, but if you can find it, there’s a fantastic Amish pretzel place in the RTM where they brush on the butter by hand after the pretzel has been taken out of the oven.

Check out the Reading Terminal Market that is right across the street from the Marriot. It is famous to Philadelphia and may be crowded but has AMAZING FOOD! Not fine dining, but tradition with great style and history. It has been on the food network numerous times and has been in Philadelphia for years.

I know others have already said it, but you’ll be right near Philly’s Chinatown. Not as big as NYC’s or SF’s, but great food and often very cheap. GREAT dim sum, awesome vegetarian food, and you can get a Vietnamese hoagie for under $3.00!!
Hell, I’m going to get on the trolley and head down there right now!
