Delegates, adults, young adults, youth, junior high, and children of all ages are invited to Mennonite Church USA Convention 2009 in Columbus, Ohio. The week will start with a day-long event for pastors Tuesday, June 30. Youth and adult worship services begin at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday evening. Convention 2009 will end late in the evening on Saturday, July 4. Please plan to travel home Sunday, July 5. Special events will include joint worship, hymn sings, a Christian music concert featuring Kutless, servant projects, learning opportunities, recreation and worship featuring numerous speakers from across the country. Online registration will begin at 8 a.m. Eastern Standard Time December 1, 2008, at http://www.MennoniteUSA.org/convention. Paper registration forms will be sent to each Mennonite Church USA congregation and organization. Paper registration forms will be accepted beginning January 2, 2009.
The convention theme, “Breathe and be filled,” is a theme meant to remind us that before we can recognize where God is at work in the world and join that work, we must first breathe in and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. In John 20:21-22, the Scripture for Convention 2009, Jesus breathes on the disciples and invites them to receive God’s Spirit so they can be prepared for the work that lies ahead. Just as Jesus’ disciples were encouraged to take in God’s Spirit so they could do God’s work in the world, so will everyone who comes to Convention 2009 be invited to take a moment to stop and breathe in God’s Spirit. It’s not about breathing to be content. It’s about breathing so that Mennonite Church USA can grow as a community of grace, joy and peace so that God’s healing and hope flow through us to the world.
