Israel is a signatory to the UN’s Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide ?

There are some who have accused me of pointing the finger at Israeli and crying ‘Genocide’ and then stating that Israel is not committing Genocide per the definition of the UN’s Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, without actually saying what the definistion under the convention.

Well it is as follows…

Article 2 of the Convention defines genocide as:
…any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

– Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Article 2

You will not that the convention does not state that to fall foul a nation or people have to have the intention to wipe out an entire race, religious group etc, but only PART of it.

In the knowledge of what UN’s Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide actually says, and the definition it gives, is there a case for accusing Israel of breaking the convention by its treatment of the Palestinian Peoples, particularly those in Gaza ?

Of course not. Israel obviously has no intent to destroy, in whole or in part, any ethnic, racial, or religious group.

Palestinians are a national group with whom Israel has a desire, an intent, and a policy to to negotiate a two-state solution with, in which there is a Palestinian state that is willing to live in peace.

Those with legitimate complaints about Israeli actions or policy discredit themselves when they start mis-using the English language. It is horrible for any humans, particularly civilians, especially children, to be killed in war. It is ridiculous to call the deaths of dozens or hundreds "genocide". It is hard to explain – without invoking anti-Semitism – outrage at the deaths of hundreds of civilians in Gaza but not at the deaths of thousands in Jordan or hundreds of thousands in Iraq or millions in Africa.

Let us work for peace and let us use dictionary.com now and then so that we may use the English language properly.

    ‘peaceful nation of israel’ can kill anyone and everyone in the name of self defence.

    Well, one person is "part" of a race, so I guess every single killing anywhere is a genocide!

    Just goes to show you how useless the UN is. Not to mention how useless Wikipedia is. Next you can bring us facts sourced from the Comedy Central network.

    And thanks for giving me another opportunity to invite everybody to read a copy of Hamas’ charter, which declares Israel must be destroyed.

    israel has never and will not follow the rules in the past and future. They think they are better than everyone else and dont have to play by the rules. You see what they think of the UN, they bombed a UN school full of civilians today.

    if you are referring to hamas being a group you are mistaken, they are a recognised terrorist organisation and not recognised by the UN as Representative of the Palestinian people

    They also signed a truce with Hamas which they never kept to from day one. I’m surprised Hamas even sat at a table with them.
    Although I suppose by denying 1.5 million people food, electricity, water and fuel that is keeping to a signed agreement…NOT!Welcome to Gaza, twinned with the Warsaw Ghetto.
    It isn’t the first time Israel have ignored international law, they make a habit of ignoring it.

    I agree with Eric.

    But even if you were right, what does that say about Hamas one of whose main reasons for existing is to destroy the Israelis?

    What about Hamas refusing to allow the Red Cross to visit Gilad Shalit – it’s nearly 3 years since his kidnap from Israeli soil.

    It’s sickening to see so many so called liberal people applying double standards because it suits them so they can bash Israel.

    Technically you have a point BUT there is no intent to commit Genocide in Israels actions ,that is where your accusations fall down.
    Israel is RETALIATING against aggression from your "victims" .
    Hamas on the other hand ARE guilty of intentional Genocide as per your description – THEIR intent is to kill EVERY Jew ,man ,woman AND child !!
