Why did Republicans tell so many lies during their convention? Doesn’t Truth serve their purposes?

Summary:

Joe Lieberman and his former Senate colleague Fred Thompson both made misleading claims about Obama in their prime time GOP convention speeches on Tuesday. We’ve heard two of them before – many times.

Lieberman said Obama hadn’t "reached across party lines" to accomplish "anything significant," though Obama has teamed with GOP Sens. Tom Coburn and Richard Lugar to pass laws enhancing government transparency and curtailing the proliferation of nuclear and conventional weapons.

Thompson repeated misleading claims about Obama’s tax program, saying it would bring "one of the largest tax increases in American history." But as increases go, Obama’s package is hardly a history-maker. It would raise taxes for families with incomes above $250,000. Most people would see a cut.

Lieberman also accused Obama of "voting to cut off funding for our American troops on the battlefield." But Obama’s only vote against a war-funding bill came after Bush vetoed a version of the bill Obama had supported – and McCain urged the veto.

That’s want the GOP is good at lies, rumors, fear tactics and hate mongering. They have to lie to get votes. The GOP work on people fears and prejudice. They have been in power for eight years and don’t want to give it up. They have to lie to win. (=

because they know that most illiterate americans only listen to what they say on TV and dont care about the facts.. thats how they won the last election and thats how they plan to win this one too.

They will say whatever bs they want to portray obama as a black power loving, white america hating, muslim – thats all they can do.. if they actually stuck to the facts, this election cycle would have been pretty damn interesting.. we could have had some good debates, fact vs fact.. but thats not what the republicans want.. its really sad.. but thats just how it is.

Its very obvious to all educated people that obama is a pretty stand up guy. He does not go about insulting McCain or Palin. But they just seem to stick to the same old politics.. If you have been paying attention its easy to see that Obama does not want to just sling mud around, but thats how the republicans are playing .. thats how they always play.. i just hope they get their butts kicked so that future election cycles invovle real thought and process, instead of childish bickering.. that will only be good for america

Truth is not what won them the election last time. Fear mongering and smear attacks did. They appear to think it will work again.

I think he meant reaching across party lines to vote for stuff most other Dems wouldn’t. The nuclear proliferation issue was supported by both parties. Nice try, though.

And, their approach is smoke and mirrors. They didn’t talk about anything that actually makes a difference in the homes of the average American. Instead they made fun of Obama actually giving a damn about poor people in the Chicago community that was hit hard when workers lost their job. That was one of the most selfless things a person could do, yet the right laugh at such things.

I would much rather take the man who at least says he is going to do something about the little people, versus the people who just makes fun of people who take that approach.

The Republicans (and Sarah Palin) REEK of dishonesty. To say nothing of the fact that Palin’s snide and sarcastic delivery was incredibly IMMATURE and appeals only to redneck-types who drive around in their pickup trucks shooting at highway signs and small animals (and maybe an occasional moose!)

Do you think that American voters would have voted for George W. Bush had they known that he is a Liar and deceiver, has a criminal record (DUI), was a Deserter, Bankrupted three different companies, is a dope addict, and is a false Christian?

    Well they DID! Twice!

Truth? Serving the purposes of the Republicans? Hasn’t done for the last eight years – or come to that, the eight before that…No reason to expect change form the Republicans at this point. Which, coupled with the fact that both Senator McCain and governor Palin appear to view the Bush years as a success – unlike the vast majority of American citizens, obviously – is why when THEY talk about delivering change it rings incredibly hollow, like a word they wouldn’t dare to use if the election hadn’t been forced to become about that very subject…

So its news to you that politicians lie? This has been a common practice for years. Example – Biden said Obama was not qualified to be president but now he backs him. But to answer your question, the reason politicians lie is to get your vote. Votes are the bottom line. Many politicians promise the world but deliver nothing or at least very little.

Obama DID reach across party lines…to pass the bag of popcorn.

These guys are splitting hairs. How about the little fib by Al Gore "The Stongest Economy in 40 Years!"? When he said that at the convention, I had been told just a few weeks earlier that the largest tractor trailer truck manufacturing plant in the world where I was working was laying off 1,307 employees (of which I was one). We found out later, the country had already began a slide into a recession.

Go piss up someone else’s rope.

You’ll have to do better than that.
    1) "reached across party lines" to accomplish "anything significant," is by obviously subjective. If my idea of "significant" differs from yours that doesn’t make me a liar.
    2) Obama pledges to allow the present tax rate package to "expire." Democrats say this isn’t an increase, it’s just "undoing the cuts." Whatever you like to call it, it will mean the largest rate increase for EVERYONE WHO PAYS TAXES in all of history. Obama even acknowledges further increases on top of that. But, as long as you don’t get a paycheck or buy anything, you shouldn’t be effected all that much.
    3) The war funding Obama voted for included lots of pork, withdrawal deadlines and almost no actual war funding, thus leading to its veto. Find me a clean funding bill that he voted for.
That’s zero for three, but thank you for playing.

They were trying to be entertaining instead of truthful.

If they told the truth they would never get elected. Sheesh! Do you really think they ever intended on telling the truth?

Give them credit for not mentioning Bush – at least that let them tell fewer lies.

You have to lie when your opponent is as smart and eloquent as Obama. And if you can’t outright lie, then you can obfuscate, equivocate, exaggerate, fabricate, prevaricate, distort, misrepresent, misquote, take out of context, misreport, distort, falsify, twist and/or stretch the truth just until breaking point. Just as long as it isn’t an outright lie. It works wonders for the Republicans to avoid the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
