This article is written in a way which portrays poor whites as, “lazy, backwards, wild toothless and dirty people. The idea of labeling the poor rural whites and stereotyping them with the likes of The Beverly Hillbillies and characters such as Gomer Pyle. I think most of this is done in an effort to distance us from them. In other words, as long as I can either demonize them as lazy and ignorant, I can convince others that most if not all of their issues are self imposed. This article clearly focuses on class as a lifestyle issue. According to Jarosz and Lawson, “Construction of rednecks as obsolescent and unsophisticated serves to distance ‘rednecks’ from ‘regular folk’.”
