Who considers ‘The Geneva Convention’ a important document for all the world?

Sorry, Politics section ain’t moving fast enough so I’m stuck asking question that enter my head.

My opinion is, it is. My major focus is on the bit about torture. A person will say anything to get out of it. And it’s inhumane, sure they do the same, but why follow their example? Show them you’re better than them?

This isn’t exactly based on now. It’s sorta more based on future and past I guess. I abhor the use of torture on anyone.

You are absolutely right. Geneva Convention is an extremely important document for any military combatants. It protects them against inhumane treatment such as torture and allows Red Cross to assess their condition on regular basis.

Time and time again, torture has been proven worthless as an information gathering device.

Most of the info the interrogators got was garbage. Like you said, people will say anything their captors want to hear.

Actually the Geneva convention gave our soldiers the right to hang all the combatants as spies out of uniform. But we had pity on them and just poured water up their nose.

It is a very important document.

Unfortunately, the enemies we now fight have as much respect for the conventions as they do the Holy Bible.

Fighting a war is not about " Showing them we are better than them" !

    It’s about WINNING.

And in today’s wars, information is how you win.

Lastly, the Geneva convention applies to POW’s only, not enemy combatants.

Your view is admirable and a nice wish. But reality dictates a different approach must be taken to insure victory.

They call it WAR for a reason.

The Geneva Convention is an agreement, not a document of international law. It requires both warring parties to sign onto it. If they don’t, then it doesn’t apply. And it doesn’t apply to terrorists.

It is a good document and premise; however we are not fighting a nation that supports/equally acknowledges Geneva Convention. We are fighting an insurgency and terrorism system that utilizes means to succeed on their own terms; not a nation/country. Yet, as someone mentions above, War is War. I think even a “civilized” nation could disregard Geneva if it meant to succeed.

However, it can work to the benefit of protecting the troops. Nations are required to honor the codes to treat POW’s in a certain manner and humanly. If they disregard these, they can be held accountable post war/victory for their disregard of Geneva conventions. But like I said, we are not fighting a nation right now; the US abides by it, our current "enemy" does not.

Oh well that’s easy asking a bunch of people in front of a computer a question like that. Why don’t you consider those countries who don’t give a damn about the Geneva Convention, or its documents? Your idea of ’show them your better than them’ does not exists in the minds of criminals. They see it as a sweet sentiment that befits the mouth of their grandmother.

I love torture. Would torture the hell out of anyone who hurt my children. Sloooow, agonizing torture. Uh … I am getting myself all excited.

It doesn’t me crap to me ! Because we are the only nation that abides by it ! We can’t bloody the nose of a prisoner, and now the moron in the White House wants the military to make citizens arrest on the battle field if they aren’t killed first trying ! Look at the Navy seals being charged because of his new policy’s we train them to be stealth , fast, and efficient then when they bring in a most wanted criminal of war they are charges with assault ! Something is very wrong with our leaders !
