Electronic Cigarettes, the FDA and Nicotine

The media of late have become fascinated with these new fangled electronic cigarettes of smokeless cigarettes as they are often called. But why and why now?

Most likely this is because of a recent court ruling that prohibited the Food and Drug Administration of interfering with the import of these electronic cigarettes to the United States. It appears that the FDA is on some type of witch hunt to get these ecigs permanently banned.

The reasoning for the FDA’s opposition to the ecigarette seems to be largely due to two bones of contention: 1) the discovery of a single trace element of a carcinogen, which was found in a single cartridge. 2) The lack of regulation over the amount of nicotine included in each cartridge and the undermined health risk (if any) of nicotine.

Who will win the battle between the FDA and the electronic cigarette manufacturers? That remains to be seen.
